WANTED: Passionate Young Entrepreneurs Ready To Grow Their Business
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS STEPPING UP PROGRAM
New program begins in September 09. Apply Now.
There is a fine line between having a business that runs you and one that you own. If your business has hit a point where you feel like you are doing all the jobs in the business and you could burn out at any minute, it’s time to stop and have a think about a better way to grow your business.

If your business looks like this (organisational chart above), you need to get out of your own way and start building systems in your business to organise and delegate some of the responsibilities.
It’s time you took the stress out of your business and stopped doing some of the jobs you do each day and put people and systems in place. This is how you grow your business and it’s what The Frank Team can teach you in their Young Entrepreneurs Stepping Up Program.
The Frank Team recently reflected on their own successful business journey, as well as consulting with successful young entrepreneurs about their business’s development needs in the growth phase. Two things stood out: systems development and marketing. The Frank Team has combined these two areas in their Young Entrepreneurs Stepping Up Program specifically to help you as the young entrepreneur get through this phase of your businesses growth, and would like to invite you to be part of our next Young Entrepreneurs Stepping Up Program.
This program is made possible by the NSW Department of Industry and Investment (DII) the New South Wales Government’s business development agency.
DII delivers programs and services that support the NSW Government’s commitment to winning new business activity for NSW, and developing the capacity and productivity of the State’s economy.

o Workshops + Mentors + BONUS FEATURES
While we are running a Young Entrepreneurs Stepping Up Programs, with a mentoring aspect, and funded by DII NSW, that is where the similarity to any other YESUP ends. Each YESUP covers a different topic, with ours having a focus on Lifecycle Marketing and Systems Development, which is vital to growing your business.
The FRANK Team style of presenting is also very different to what you will find elsewhere. Our Director and the presenter for the program, Jessica Kiely-Schebesta, is a 32 year old entrepreneur herself. She’s been running her own businesses since the age of 19 and has never worked for anyone else. Jess’s presenting style is very engaging and a lot of fun – you’ll never get bored at one of our workshops! They’re as interactive as possible, and at the YESUP workshops we’ll encourage you to bring along your laptop and get started right away on your planning and systems.
All of our workshops are based on our own experience. The implementation of marketing systems has completely changed how The FRANK Team operates day to day – and made it a LOT easier. We’ve implemented the systems that you will be learning about in the program, meaning you can learn from our mis – takes and successes. We essentially open our business up and show you how.
We’ve also included a number of additional features in our program, such as an ENYA Lawsense Workshop; Weekly Entrepreneurial Tips; A Self-Coaching session with a qualified personal coach; as well as opportunities at every workshop for “gripes time” – share your business problems with the other participants and mentors and have everyone present brainstorming ideas to help you overcome those problems, based on their own experience.

Who is the Frank Team & Jessica Schebesta (Kiely)?
Holding down a full time desk job isn’t Jessica Schebesta (Kiely)’s style – because she’d prefer to run the company! This would explain why Jessica has been running her own companies from the age of 19. She is currently 32 years old, the Founder & Director of The Frank Team and previously New Horizon Tutoring, her first ever business that she started at the age of 19.
An entrepreneur from an early age without really realising it, Jessica has never worked for anyone else having created her own employment since the end of school.
Her first business New Horizon Tutoring, which began in the Hills district offered in-house tutoring for school students, and her current company The Frank Team inspires & enables people to build their career, business and entrepreneurial skills through fun, interactive workshops, guest speaking, program development, consultancy and resources for schools, universities, councils, government departments, youth organisations, community groups and corporates. The Frank Team is a creative education company.
With The Frank Team, Jessica has taken an idea that she was told “would never work” to a national success story to show that people before profit does work. Her company has undergone amazing growth with the number of participants experiencing Frank Team programs hitting 30,000.
From its beginnings in her bedroom in 2001, The Frank Team now has 3 full time staff and 15 facilitators across Australia, and the impact of their programs have been felt in metro cities, regionally and rural locations, from Halls Creek in WA to King Island in Tasmania and everywhere in between.
2006 also saw The Frank Team run its first truly international program with Jessica travelling to Bahrain in the Middle East to develop the leadership and project management skills of their young people.
Jessica and The Frank Team have worked with organisations like the Commonwealth Bank Foundation, Westpac, NSW Department of State & Regional Development, Australian Business Community Network, NSW Parliament, Department of Education Science & Training, Macquarie University, Melbourne University, Chevron, Cerebos, National Australia Bank as well as hundreds of schools around Australia.
Over the past 10 years of running her own businesses, Jessica has developed a wealth of experience and expertise. She is an expert in powerful presentations especially for a youth audience, human resource management for small businesses including motivating and retaining staff, setting up and managing systems that help a small business tick, business and team skills, coaching and keeping people on task, and of course a large amount of experience in starting from scratch with ideas and making them a reality.
In addition to running her businesses, Jessica has been a dance teacher – teaching jazz, contemporary and tap – for over ten years. In her ’spare’ time, Jessica loves working at her family’s sheep station near Mudgee in regional NSW.
Jessica’s key passions are equipping people with the skills to turn their ideas into a new business venture, career goal or community project, and working in collaboration with other passionate people.
“I love to combine my endless enthusiasm and teaching ability to encourage and empower all people I come in contact with to help them take their ideas and make them a reality.”

Selling to Baby Boomers & Gen X

Bridging the Generation Gap
Young entrepreneur Amanda Jephtha recently attended a workshop with social researcher Mark McCrindle and is here to share the knowledge from that session.
Fact: everyone loves to hate Gen Y.
Fact: the future is not created by an economy, but a demography.
Fact: Gen Y is here to stay – and rule!
So how can we shake off our bad rep as demanding, fast-moving, selfish kids and get our message across?
How can we more effectively work with and sell to the older generations?
The key is to first UNDERSTAND them, and then modify your actions.
Check out these insights and tips on how to bridge the generation gap.
Why there are SO many oldies…
Since we’re not having as many babies and we’re all getting older (and living longer), soon there will be an explosion of older people. Actually, by 2020, there will be more than 3 times the amount of 65-69 year olds compared to 1978! A staggering statistic.
So whether we like it or not, we have to learn to communicate effectively with the older generations if we’re going to run successful businesses.
Thinking with the head versus thinking with the heart.
Typically, Gen Y decides with their emotions. Never mind reason; if we’ve absolutely fallen in love with something because of it’s looks or how it makes us feel, we simply buy it.
Gen Y engages emotionally as:
Seekers – someone who doesn’t know too much about a product, but is blindingly faithful, and
Embracers – someone who will trumpet your horn with full product knowledge and is in lurve with your product.
However, the older generations will first rationalise the purchase. Does this fit my needs? Is it value for (my heard-earned) money? Is the product guaranteed?
Generation X and the Baby Boomers engage cognitively as:
Hecklers – someone who doesn’t really understand the product and isn’t particularly attracted to it, and
Agree-ers – someone who understands the product is a good fit to their needs, but feels indifferent to the product.
Our aim is to convert all clients in to Embracers.

How to Sell to the Older Generation
Firstly, we need to satisfy the older generation’s need to rationalise. Answer their questions, even if you think they’re basic or repetitive – but don’t make them feel stupid!
Slow the pace down if you’re discussing new concepts.
Once we’ve ticked this box, only then can we successfully move them to the emotional quadrants, ultimately ending up as Embracers.
By then, the older generation will be your most powerful sales force. And considering the Baby Boomers own the majority of the wealth and spend more on technology than any other generation, who wouldn’t strive to achieve this?
What NOT to say
Generation X and the Baby Boomers just don’t use our vocab. Some even blame us for the downfall of the English language! But what do they particularly dislike?
Clichés.
We all love to hate clichés! So much so, McCrindle Research set out to find the top 10 clichés Gen Y use that Generation X and the Baby Boomers hate. So when you’re chatting with the oldies, avoid using:
1. My bad
2. Random
3. So hot right now
4. Fully sick
5. So over that
6. Oh my gosh
7. Whatever
8. Totally
9. Chillout
10. Whassup
Check out this full list of clichés that should best be avoided, no matter who you’re communicating with.
Remember…
Each generation operates differently. By being mindful of these differences, not only can we grow our businesses – we can make the richest and most abundant generation our biggest advocate!

Ten Secrets to Great Email Marketing
February 1, 2009 by admin
Filed under Homepage, Homepage-Growing, Marketing, Start Up Marketing
The debate about snailmail versus email rages on between the old timer marketers and the new age digital marketers. Here we get the inside word from a digital marketer’s perspective, Fred Schebesta, on how to increase your response rates and generate a multitude of leads.
As young entrepreneurs you often start with little to no money, and using the internet and emarketing smartly is vital as it doesn’t carry to cost of other more traditional marketing methods.
1. No mistakes!
Broken links and images in your emails are an instant detraction from what you’re offering. Not only does it damage the image of your company it also disables the customer from accepting your offer.
2. Make it a quick message for a quick medium.
You have 3 seconds to grab your customer’s attention otherwise they can just press delete or move onto the next email. Make sure your message is transferred quickly as people tend to read and discard email quickly.
3. Send more than one email in the campaign.
After you’ve sent your initial email with its offer send another one a week later saying that the offer has almost expired. This creates urgency for the reader.
4. Email link to websites.
You’ll receive much faster response rates if you link to a website instead of asking the buyer to pick up a telephone and call you. Ensure that your offer is clearly displayed on your website and it’s clearly understood how to accept the offer.
5. Reply to your responses.
Unlike with other mediums, the time between when your offer is delivered and when it can be acted upon is very short. As a rule, your response time should not be longer than 12 hours.
6. Give customers a reason to refer.
At the bottom of your email put a small blurb. “If you know of anyone else who would be interested in this offer please forward them this email.” Give your customers a reason to refer a friend and you’ll see an even better response rate.
7. Layout of the email.
Understand how your audience is going to read their email. In general people only view the email in a small box. What that means for your email is that it needs to convey its message in that little box and give them a reason to scroll down.
8. Tune into WIIFM.
The WIIFM (Whats in it for me?) station is a favourite station when it comes to accepting special sales offers. Ensure that your buyer has a clear and simple way of accepting your offer. ‘Click here to receive a free case study’ – ‘ Reply to this email to receive a free copy’ – ‘Place your name in the form to begin
your registration process’.
9. Flashy images vs Text.
There must be a balance between images and text in email marketing. Preferably more text than images. One image plus a single link with a call to action in actual text is ideal.
10. Clean Subjects.
Ensure that you have a subject line that is catchy enough for your email to be opened and relevant enough for the email to be read all the way through. Try using questions (e.g. Are you struggling to find clients?) or great adjectives (e.g. Exclusive unveiling of new product).

Juicy Branding with Tim Pethick
January 26, 2009 by admin
Filed under Homepage, Marketing, Start Up Marketing
If you couldn’t be at the Sydney young entrepreneur event for young people currently running (and
interested in running) their own biz that The Frank Team organised, then you missed a fab talk from Tim Pethick, inventor and chief nudie, of nudie fruit juices.
But fear not, we’ve captured some of the highlights for you here so that as a young entrepreneur you can use them in your own business right now!
Here’s the story… Tim loves fresh juice. But he didn’t always have time to make his own, especially when travelling for work, so he conducted some in-depth research and started experimenting in his own kitchen with different blends of fruits and different sized bottles.
In their first week on the market in 2003 nudie sold 40 bottles! nudie now employs 86 people and nudie’s are available in 4,500 outlets around Australia – that equates to 150,000 bottles sold every week!
Here’s some random thoughts Tim shared with us about his journey to help give you an edge on branding your new products and projects.
The principal elements of Tim’s nudie success:
* Integrity of the product
* Product difference
* Brand
* Passion
* I didn’t know what couldn’t be done – industry outsiders think differently
Tim’s insights on marketing:
People are too busy and not listening
Cutting through the clutter is increasingly difficult
You can waste a lot of money on ineffective advertising
Consumers are looking for something else
For decades marketers have known “consumers have become more discerning” yet they treat them the same way
Marketers talk AT consumers rather than WITH them
Consumers are “trading up” – they want mini-indulgences
Get people talking – “word of mouth”
Getting the BRAND message across
Australians are “increasingly unhappy with, and ignoring, advertising”
81% say they are taking less notice of advertising
66% said advertising was boring and repetitive
75% say stereotypes proliferate
Source: Eye on Australia 2003
The lessons Tim has learned:
To challenge conventional wisdom
Just do it!
There are always more reasons not to Think big!
If you don’t think you can you can’t
Enjoy the ride (and others will too)
Focus on the customer
Be the best – don’t compromise
Size doesn’t necessarily matter
Don’t focus on the competition or you will lose
Branding the nudie way:
Make your product remarkable
Make it fun
Make it positive
Don’t rely on traditional advertising
Give it (positive) attitude
Engage the consumer – maximum dialogue;maximum involvement
Savvy Networking Tactics
January 18, 2009 by admin

So you’re into business networking? Here’s some savvy tactics to make the most of your time and develop your new-found relationships.
Be Strategic
By now you should have the confidence and basic networking skills for you to enjoy and benefit from every one of your networking experiences. You’ve got some key contacts, and a thirst for more.
It’s time to get strategic. You should now know which type of networking experiences you typically get the most out of. Perhaps you find your professional association contacts a bit dry and boring but love attending a particular event or regular group meeting? Don’t cut the old ties, just focus more on the ones you can see yourself benefiting from (and enjoying!).
Start by planning your year (or what remains of it). Be strategic about the events and groups that you will frequent. Decide on your level of involvement with each of them as well (will you volunteer more time with any of them, perhaps write their newsletter or organise a fundraiser?), and weigh up what spending more time and energy on each will actually achieve. Of course, as well as penciling in these ‘must-go’ networking opportunities, you also need to leave time for those that you may not have heard about yet, such as one-off events or launches.
As well as making these choices and scheduling them into your business and social life, it can be a good idea to start a networking budget. This should include money for events and membership fees, extra money for unplanned or unexpected opportunities that come up, and a small portion of money to spend on your networking ‘weapons’ to make an impact (see below). A budget will naturally make you more strategic in your approach to networking as not only is it a self-allocated source of funds for your activities, but it also makes you think carefully about what you do and don’t want to attend.
Weaponry
Business cards, conversation starters and the ability to quickly identify relationship possibilities are the three pillars of networking basics. But these things are also expected of business people. Go the extra mile by arming yourself with some extra weapons to develop existing relationships and establish some great new ones. These things will also ensure that you’re remembered by the people that you meet!
Here’s some ideas:
Networking cards
* Get some business-card size cards created that explain what you do. This is especially suitable for businesses that often have complicated terms or concepts. Provide definitions of those terms as well as a way to find out more information.
* This is also great if you are a member of a networking group/club looking for members, as it can explain what the group does and provide contact details.
Mini-Newsletters
* Print a small newsletter about your activities to hand out to people who you end up in deep conversations with, especially if they appear genuinely interested in more information about what you do, on the spot. The newsletter should be just that, news. Don’t ever try to sell anything at a networking event.
Referral business cards
* Carry the cards of other people’s businesses you know and trust. If you meet someone and end up recommending one of the businesses you have a card for, hand them a card! It’s a good idea to write on the back of each card, “Referred by your name” so that the person remembers you and mentions you to the business. You always get back what you give out, so make sure you refer professional, ethical colleagues who deserve the promotion and who you either use or would use yourself.
A funky business card holder/case
* Many networkers (and women in particular) carry a slim, small business card case. Turn it into a conversation starter and talking point by choosing a funniy shaped or brightly coloured one. Of course, make sure the case isn’t rude!
Your diary
* This is absolutely essential incase you need to schedule a time for further discussion with a new colleague. They are much more likely to follow up on your discussion if you set up a time right away, rather than if you contact them later (which should be doing with all your contacts anyway!).
Name tag
* Get a name tag made that has your business logo on it. Carry it everywhere. This means you can easily deal with events that do not provide name tags or ones where they may have spelt your name wrong. It also means people remember your tag, especially if its bright and attractive. Wear your tag on the left hand side so as not to block it when you shake hands with people.
Somewhere to put collected cards
* Where do you put the cards you collect at an event? Whatever you do, don’t put them in your own business card case or, especially in the case of men, in the same jacket pocket that has your own cards. It doesn’t look that good to a new contact if you have to shuffle through ten cards before finding your own, so decide ahead of time where to put them.
* Ladies, if you have no hand baggage or pockets, then put them at the back of your card case, and keep your own cards at the front.
The ladies room
* Women shouldn’t underestimate the power of the ladies room! We all know how much gossip and chit chat goes on in there, so use the time spent refreshing your lipstick or washing your hands to casually chat with others. Keep the conversation casual and non-business oriented if you are the one starting it up.
Record Important Dates and Facts
There are many ways to keep in touch with your network (emails, newsletters, etc) but it’s often useful to note down specific dates and facts about each person. An email on each person’s Birthday is a nice idea, as well as Christmas or Easter cards from your business. You may even like to post or email to your database an amusing or exciting snapshot of something you have achieved or done recently (collecting your business award onstage?).
Write down important facts about the people you meet on the back of their cards, and review these regularly.
For example, you might write: “James lives with his brother Mike, a construction worker who is renovating their home. James loves motor cycles and rides every other weekend, and has bought a new bike.”
Next time you meet or contacts James you have some great conversation starters, like “How are the renovations coming along?” and “How have you been finding the new bike?”
Think Outside the Square
Almost every experience you have in your life is a networking opportunity. Of course, you don’t want to become too obsessed with that fact, but nevertheless, take your cards everywhere! After all, how many times have you bumped into someone at the shopping center, in the queue at the bank, at a friend’s place or at social engagement (party, BBQ)?
‘Networking’ events and regular group meetings (professional associations etc) aren’t the only places to network. Be prepared to meet new people (including possible clients and suppliers) at professional development events (conferences, workshops, training sessions) as well as at exhibitions, trade fairs, in foyers and elevators, and at social functions.
And remember, practice makes perfect!
